Aircraft insurance basics for private owners

Third party liability, hull cover, the EU minimums, named pilot clauses and what affects your premium.

The short answer

Third party liability insurance is mandatory in the EU under Regulation 785/2004, with minimum cover based on the aircraft’s maximum takeoff mass. Hull cover, which pays for damage to your own aircraft, is optional but usually required if the aircraft is financed.

What you can cover

  • Third party liability: damage to people and property on the ground or in the air
  • Passenger liability: required when carrying passengers
  • Hull in flight and on the ground
  • Hull ground risk only, cheaper when the aircraft is laid up

Named pilots and conditions

Policies often list who may fly the aircraft and require minimum experience on type. If someone outside those conditions flies it, the cover may not apply. Groups should make sure every member meets the policy wording.

What affects the premium

Hull value, pilot experience, the type of flying, where the aircraft is kept and your claims history. Recent hours logged on type can help, so keep your logbook complete.
