How long an EASA class 1 and class 2 medical is valid

Medical certificate validity by class and age under EASA Part MED, and how to work out your own expiry date.

The short answer

Class 2: 60 months until you turn 40, then 24 months until 50, then 12 months. Class 1: 12 months, reduced to 6 months from age 60, and from age 40 for single pilot commercial passenger flights. The age that counts is your age on the date of the examination.

Class 2 in detail

The birthday limits catch many pilots out, so check the date on the certificate rather than counting on 60 months.

• Examined before age 40: valid 60 months, but it cannot run past your 42nd birthday
• Examined between 40 and 49: valid 24 months, but it cannot run past your 51st birthday
• Examined at 50 or older: valid 12 months

Class 1 in detail

Class 1 is valid for 12 months. From age 40 it drops to 6 months for single pilot commercial air transport with passengers, and from age 60 it is 6 months for everyone. When a class 1 lapses, it still counts as a class 2 for the remaining class 2 period.
