Revalidating an SEP class rating by experience

The hours, landings and training flight you need in the last 12 months to revalidate a single engine piston rating without a proficiency check.

The short answer

An SEP rating is valid for 24 months. You can revalidate it by experience if, within the 12 months before it expires, you flew 12 hours in class, including 6 hours as PIC and 12 takeoffs and landings, plus a training flight of at least 1 hour with an instructor.

What counts

An examiner then signs the rating in your licence.

• 12 hours of flight time in single engine piston aeroplanes or TMGs
• 6 of those hours as pilot in command
• 12 takeoffs and 12 landings
• A refresher training flight of at least 1 hour with a flight instructor, which a proficiency check or skill test can replace

If you miss it

Once the rating lapses you need a proficiency check with an examiner, plus whatever refresher training a training organisation or instructor judges necessary, which depends on how long it has been. It is easier to watch the twelve month window as it fills.
